Last Updated(Beijing Time):2006-05-09 14:21
Romanian President Traian Basescu left for Vienna Monday night for a lumbar disc hernia operation, the Romanian news agency said.

The president was admitted into Bucharest University Hospital for a medical examination on Sunday after he felt pains in his back. The results showed Basescu may be suffering from a slipped disc, the news agency said.

A further medical examination at the Elias hospital in Bucharest on Monday confirmed that the president was suffering from lumbar disc hernia, the news agency said.

Basescu's economic advisor Teodor Stolojan told a TV station on Monday night that the president was now in "good mood."

An operation was scheduled for Monday night or Tuesday.
